Stephen Steinbrink
A debut Brighton show for Stephen Steinbrink, the 26 year old Arizonan who will be embarking on his second UK tour. That is not to say he is new to the game - Stephen's been touring the US for almost a decade. Growing up in Tempe, AZ, Steinbrink released music on exceptional cassette label Holy Page and performed with the likes of Mount Eerie, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Ever Ending Kicks and dozens more. His music draws to mind Avi Buffalo and Neil Young, with Arthur Russell's pop edge. With last year's astounding Arranged Waves released by prominent label Melodic and a new record on the way, Steinbrink comes to Brighton Arts Club equipped with songs of heartbreak and joy, both old and new.

Julie Byrne
Chicago-based songwriter Julie Byrne is a musician who provides the perfect tour companion to Stephen Steinbrink. Also her first Brighton show, the performance will be equally exciting and moving after impressing in the UK last summer. Like Steinbrink, Julie Byrne has released records on Holy Page and the two have shared the stage across the pond on numerous occasions. Her brand of Americana sees her draw together psychedelia, ambience and more traditional folk influences to provide what I can only describe as an moment in sound: her music is incredibly easy to get lost in, washing over you with melodic drones and textures. Last year's Rooms With Walls and Windows - labelled "2014's Great American Album" - is less about 'pop' and more about a moment - and a gorgeous one with that.

Krar Collective + Kiran Leonard + Jerkcurb
The Courtyard          £10          19/8/15

Krar Collective
Led by Temesgen Zeleke, a former student of Ethio-Jazz legend Mulatu Astatke, Krar Collective are a trio who make a unique spin on traditional Ethiopian sounds. Massively versatile, their songs are one minute slow and serenading, the next fast and funky. The simple set up of krar, percussion and vocals may seem minimal but the sound is huge and often, in spirit, punk! Charming, engaging and hypnotically groovy, their live performances have been hailed by The GuardianTime Out and many more. It is a real privilege to have Krar Collective perform.

Kiran Leonard
With his next record Grapefruit on the horizon and a series of dates at the UK's best festivals (End of the Road, Green Man, among others), Kiran Leonard is on his way to big things. Contributor and close friend of Dig That Treasure!, Kiran's sound brings together similar musical corners to what DTT strives for, combining Frank Zappa, Van Dyke Parks and Alèmayèhu Eshèté to make music that is at once obscure and accessible. His records are tirelessly inventive and intricately arranged, combining orchestral instruments, electronics and everyday household objects to create a frantic and full sound. This time round Kiran will be playing a stripped back - but equally as effective - solo set.

Jerkcurb
London based artist Jerkcurb describes his creations as "guitar music for squids". Combining no-wave, ambient music and easy-listening, Jacob Read makes songs that belong in sci-fi films, elevators and ocean beds. His influences spread far and wide, drawing on everyone from the likes of Ween and R. Stevie Moore to Joe Meek and Scott Walker. Jerkcurb is one of the most exciting musicians in London at this moment.

Laetitia Sadier
A return to Cafe Oto for Laetitia Sadier, best known as frontwoman for Stereolab. The first night of a tour promoting new solo album Something Shines, this performance promises to be special. Few musicians can claim to have made such a mark on the British music scene in the last thirty years. As a member of Stereolab, she’s released ten full albums, gaining along the way a large dedicated fanbase and acclaim that rightfully singles out Stereolab as "one of the most influential alternative bands of the '90s”. With influences as wide as Krautrock, bossa-nova and French pop, the band sculpted a truly original and distinctive sound, one that journalist Simon Reynolds describes as "always the same, always different".

Following the band's hiatus in 2009, Sadier went solo. Aesthetically, her solo work is a clear continuity of her time in Stereolab, whilst remaining unafraid of change. Superb new single "Then, I Will Love You Again" draws together strings, horns and a typically driven motorik beat to produce a beautiful building song that is both familiar and exciting. Aside from her solo work, Laetitia Sadier has collaborated with the likes of Mouse On Mars, Atlas Sound, The High Llamas, Blur and Common. She remains one of the most innovative and influential musicians of our time, making this coming show one that's impossible to miss.

Jane Weaver
A constant on the British folk and psychedelic scenes, Jane Weaver is a shapeshifting songstress, one whose experiments have seen her drift from traditional folk to conceptual dream pop. With a new album on the horizon (one that has been described as “sax-laced space-rock” by The Quietus), Weaver is making an impressive return to the fore. Equally experimental and melodious, Jane Weaver works as a perfect support for Laetitia Sadier - on a bill of innovative female-fronted cosmic rock.

Let's Eat Grandma
A debut London show for Rosa and Jenny,  the two 15 year old girls from Norwich who, together, make Let’s Eat Grandma. The schoolgirls take influence from current chart music but channel it into an approach that is truly unique and undefinable: from saxophone solos to keyboard drones, Let’s Eat Grandma deconstruct pop music and use their musical innocence to experiment in ways that most bands couldn’t dream of. Like a cross between CocoRosie, The Shaggs and Abba, the final product is a sound as sophisticated as it is naive and one that verges on being ‘outsider’. A truly unique experience, their live show consists of clapping games, matching outfits, and on occasion, with the girls’ hair plaited together. This debut promises a lot, so there's no excuse for arriving late.
