Resonance FM 4/10/17

I opened up the night with a great Ariel Pink deep cut 'I'm Inside R. Stevie's Brain', an ode to the outsider legend taken from his album FF (and later included on the R. Stevie Moore collaboration album Ku Klux Glam). Next up was a tune from new London producer rAHHH, who I only discovered via a housemate a few hours before the show. I then span a cut from Smithsonian Folkways album Six Boys In Trouble before a track by Japanese rock group Cymbals. Remaining in Japan, a song by Ippu-Do followed, leading into a Foster Manganyi tune (as sampled in Jessy Lanza's 'It Means I Love You'). I closed the show with the opening song from Dan Armeanca's amazing Outernational Days 2016 set. Wharfwhit - Little Pebbles In My Sock (ft. Sonny)

Wharfwhit is the project of Jamie Bulled, one third of Brit-J-Pop group Kero Kero Bonito. In this guise, Bulled departs from KKB's cutesy pop and embraces a dirtier, darker side. Elements remain, such the elastic, colourful production and the distinctive playfulness that characterises their sound. The combination of these elements with a rougher, more uneasy edge as well as various guest rappers and singers produces a really interesting sound that isn't being done by many others at the moment.

Resonance FM 27/9/17

I kicked off this episode with a great track from the master of chopped vocals, Japanese producer in the blue shirt. After a interlude of sorts by his countryman Akiko Yano (taken from the film My Neighbors The Yamadas) I returned to in the blue shirt, playing his finest tune, 'Everything Affair'. That led straight into a track from Malian DJ Sandji, before I slowed it down a little with post-manele group Raze De Soare and a lovely song by Eritrean singer Yemane Barya. I closed the show with a song by young South London sibling trio Honey Hahs, who will be performing at the first Dig That Treasure! vs. Moshi Moshi Records night on October 12th. Tickets here!

Resonance FM 20/9/17

The second episode in this new run of Resonance shows opened with a pop track from ambience expert Virginia Astley, and closed with a cracking slice of Japanese synth-funk by Naoya Matsuoka called Watermelon Dandies. Along the way I dropped a tune by Negib Ould Ngainich (via Sahel Sounds), a corporate morale-booster from an 'Industrial Musical', and - in direct contrast - some acapella punk yelling by Furious Pig. I also played two tunes from the forthcoming Woo reissue, out on Emotional Rescue in October, as well an oldie for measure.

Resonance FM 13/9/17

Damn Will, back at it again with the new episodes of Dig That Treasure! Today's show was the first episode on Resonance FM in over two years (the last was that earth-shattering finale in July 2015). In the meantime, I did five shows on Resonance EXTRA, but this here is the first live show since the aforementioned game-changer. I opened up with a tune by Alem Kebede, from an album I picked up at Kukulu Market in Chicago last Autumn. The episode travelled through The Holiday City Hot Cha Kitchen Band (a group of gals over 52 who love to sing and kazoo), new age composer Iasos, bonkers bubblegrime by Wharfwhit and the beautiful lounge of Piero Piccioni, before ending on a cut off Princess Nicotine by Tonte Theintan.

Guest Post: I Am Just A Pupil presents... Evening Meditation Mix

I am very excited to share a beautifully crafted mix, put together by ambient musician I Am Just A Pupil. The project of North Carolina based Josh Clarke, I Am Just A Pupil has a prolific catalogue that stretches from the mournful Somber Songs Collection to the witty, absurd and surprisingly poignant new age of 12 Hours FULL RELAXATION (the latter featuring the remarkable standout 'Family Dollar'). The mix that Clarke has lovingly put together for Dig That Treasure! is a gorgeous production that transcends the typical song-after-song format of a traditional guest mix. Instead, Evening Meditation Mix is a seamless weaving together of anonymous instrumental samples - beautiful harp, strings and woodwind - taken from "no ID or questionable ID cassettes/mix cds from thrift stores." The result comes off as somewhere in the middle ground between The Caretaker and Virginia Astley's ambient works.

Guest Post: Pictorial Candi presents Sunday Mood Nr.1 Mix

It's been over two years since the last guest mix was published on this blog (Otis Fodder's "Wordless Vocalizations Mix", March '14), so I'm very excited to share a new mix put together by Candelaria Saenz Valiente (Candi) of Pictorial Candi. The Warsaw-based Argentine has been on the scene for a while, formerly with noise pop outfit Paristetris and presently as Pictorial Candi - the name under which she has recently opened for Deerhoof and R. Stevie Moore. The second Pictorial Candi record was released earlier this year and is home to one of the year's best tracks, the triumphant 'Rhoda'. On this mix Candi takes us on a tour of contemporaries and classics, beginning with German transcendentalists Popol Vuh and ending with DIY queen of southern England Keel Her. Along the way we're treated to tunes by Warsaw group Xenony, Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Battisti and Brazilian duo Gal Costa & Tim Maia.
