Resonance FM 27/11/18

A deliciously eclectic mix, here... I kicked off the show with a song by Visible Cloaks - who don't really fit this show's requirements but who I've been enjoying a lot recently - and closed the show with a track by Georgian vocal group Orera. Along the way were two tunes from Sudanese artists featured on the 'Two Niles To Sing A Melody' compilation, some vintage highlife from CST Amankwah, and a duo of bangers by Indian/Portuguese/English/Icelandic sex symbol Leoncie.

Dig That Treasure (27/11/18)
Visible Cloaks - Wheel
Leoncie - Love In A Pub
Leoncie - Enginn Þrikantur Hér (No Threesome Here)
CST Amankwah - Saade Wobe Su

Орэра - Старый Мотив (Old Motive)

Resonance FM 20/11/18 (Jockstrap)

On this episode I was joined by my favourite band of the minute, the dynamic orchestral pop group Jockstrap. Georgia (vox/violin) and Michael (bass) from the band played nine songs of their choosing, all of which were by their friends/contemporaries. Scarily talented friendship group they've got there... From Jockstrap's own Taylor Skye to Simeon May's beautiful lonely sax via Rodeo Jones' football-based sound-collage and a double-whammy of bonkers Eric Fabrizi tunes, most of this stuff is new/unreleased and all of it is bloody great. Be sure to listen to this one (and apologies in advance for the couple of technical mistakes that occurred).

Dig That Treasure (20/11/18)
Taylor Skye - Kode Fine
Pet Grotesque - 2 Late
Eric Fabrizi - Can't Stop Thinking About You
Eric Fabrizi - Sexual Frustration
Rodeo Jones - Aberdeen
The Guest - Theme From Failure (pt.1)
Jerskin Fendrix - Onigiri
Pete Um - Real Rock & Roll
Simeon May - Untitled

I tried the impossible - to condense Le Guess Who 2018, one of the best weekends I've ever had, packed with sensational live performances, into 30 minutes. I wasn't able to make the recordings I'd hoped to, so had to settle with spinning the studio versions of some of my highlights. I played songs from my top three sets of the weekend (Vashti Bunyan, Kate NV, Beverly Glenn-Copeland) as well as some from other highlights (Ammar 808, Rizan Said, Hailu Mergia) and even one from an artist I didn't manage to catch, but wish I had (Howie Lee). What a weekend. Roll on next year...

Dig That Treasure (13/11/18)
Kate NV - вас YOU
Vashti Bunyan - I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind
Hailu Mergia - Eti Gual Blenai
Rizan Said - Electric Mawwal I
Ammar 808 - Alech Taadini
Howie Lee - Bei Hai
Beverly Glenn-Copeland - Deep River

I opened and closed this show with songs from the new Dig That Treasure! Records release 'Miscellaneous Recordings, 2008-12'. The album is a 35 track collection of recordings I made during the aforementioned years. As the 'press release' of-sorts notes, "the album is intended as a reflexive, auto-ethnographic study. It’s an open exhibition of amateurism and child-like creativity." It was a strange thing for me to release - and an even stranger thing to play on air. Also on the show were a Cambodian novelty tune, some post-vaporwave-ish-I-dunno, a beautiful and lengthy piece of meditative Ethiopian folk pop, and a recording by the mysterious Rosielou (who, if you see this, please email me, I would like to hear the recordings of yours I have lost track off! - digthattreasure@live.com).

Dig That Treasure (6/11/18)
Will M Hall - Warm Autumn v.1 [c.2011]
Prum Manh - Two Wives Are Twice The Problem
Yung Bae - 私は愛に ハイです
Will M Hall - Cobbled Streets [c.2011]

Bezawork Asfaw - Tezeta

On this week's show I was joined by Greek native Antonis Rousounelos who played a selection of tunes from his homeland, spanning from 1932 to 1939. He took over hosting duties and, over the course of a half hour, he surveyed Izmir, Rebetiko, novelty and Hawaiian-influenced songs. Listen below!

I packed the songs in this week. Nora Guthrie - daughter of Woody - kicked off the show with the beautiful 'Home Before Dark'. Next was French composer Pascal Comelade, followed by Ethiopian musician Feysel Shemolo (who seemingly only has one song online - one fewer than Nora Guthrie...). Another Frenchman, Roland Bocquet, and Japanese legend Jun Togawa followed (the latter with a Velvet Underground cover). I closed the show with Mziuri, a Soviet-era Georgian state band made up of children, and Lonnie Holley, whose brand new tune 'Sometimes I Wanna Dance' I can't stop listening to.

Dig That Treasure (23/10/18)
Nora Guthrie - Home Before Dark
Pascal Comelade - Nature Morte Aux Maracas
Feysel Shemolo - Teney Lemuhaba

Resonance FM 16/10/18 (Le Guess Who II)

Last night was the second of two episodes previewing Utrecht's Le Guess Who festival. The line up is ludicrously good and rich with surprises and wonders from all around the world, so it was some headache selecting just one hour's worth of music to air over these two episodes. I kicked off this show with a song I'd already played twice in previous episodes, 'Ever New' by Beverly Glenn-Copeland. I followed with two (very different) guitar based tracks by Cindy Lee and Sibusile Xaba, before playing two (very different) synth based tracks by Islam Chipsy and Tirzah. I closed the show with the same artist who will likely close my festival weekend, Swamp Dogg! Le Guess Who runs November 8-11 in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Dig That Treasure (16/10/18)
Beverly Glenn-Copeland - Ever New
Cindy Lee - Power & Possession
Sibusile Xaba - Open Letter To Adoniah
Islam Chipsy & EEK - El Bawaba
Tirzah - Holding On
Swamp Dogg - Star Dust

Resonance FM 9/10/18

I'm changing things a little... I don't like speaking on air, particularly, and so I'm only going cut the chat right down. I'll introduce the show at the beginning and provide contact details/news/upcoming events at the end. In between will be solid tunes (with artist and track title provided). This was the first week of doing so - I kicked off with a rendition of Colonel Bogey March by 周聰、呂紅 before spinning tunes by Yeshimebet Dubale (yet again!), the bonkers and inimitable Superstar & Star, the jazz-trained Larry Chernicoff and the jazz-breaking Foodman. I closed the show with my favourite new song, Hayley by Jockstrap, who'll be joining me in the studio on November 20th.

Dig That Treasure (9/10/18)
周聰、呂紅 - 快樂進行曲
Yeshimebet Dubale & Kenedy Mengesha - Dabes
Superstar & Star - I Ain't Missing You
Larry Chernicoff - Wind Horses
Foodman - Jazz
Jockstrap - Hayley

Resonance FM 2/10/18 (Le Guess Who)

Last night was the first of two episodes previewing Utrecht's Le Guess Who? festival. It's been hard selecting just 2x 30 minute shows' worth of music as the line-up is completely rammed with stuff I'm excited to see, but I feel I've done the line-up justice with this first episode (and the second which is to come in a fortnight). I kicked off the show in energetic fashion with a track from Louisiana bounce artist Katey Red before slipping into something a little more comfortable with tunes by Shintaro Sakamoto and Kate NV. Next was a duo of solo female artists, the first being New York's Eartheater and the second the inimitable Vashti Bunyan. I closed the show with a new tune by Ethiopian legend Hailu Mergia. Le Guess Who runs November 8-11 in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Dig That Treasure (2/10/18)
Katey Red - Where Da Melph At
Shintaro Sakamoto - Birth Of The Super Cult
Kate NV - Kata
Eartheater - Youniverse
Vashti Bunyan - Gunpowder
Hailu Mergia - Lala Belu

Resonance FM 25/9/18 (Kiran Leonard II)

On this week's episode I was joined by the wonderful Kiran Leonard, friend of Dig That Treasure and recent arrival in London, who play seven tunes of his choosing. What proceeded was a mix of steel-pan-infused 60s pop, Swiss coldwave, mathematic rock and Brazilian jam-outs. It was a blast - and always a pleasure to be introduced to new stuff! Kiran's new record, Western Culture, is out on October 18th on Moshi Moshi Records. He will also be touring the UK throughout October, November and December.
